Feature Interview with David Kok

After a hiatus from the floorballing scene due to the PMR examinations, Innebandy Forward David Kok relates his emotions and feelings training and playing competitive floorball again with Innebandy!Co.

Well, there's no doubt a sense of excitement and relief being able to start training with Innebandy!Co about a month ago. However, when it came to participating in SUKPEN, it was a totally different experience, a nerve-wrecking one i would say. It's because of the fact that I've just started training not too long ago and also because I've not participated in any floorball competitions for almost a year. i was worried that i might make unpardonable blunders and affect the whole team. Those were the things anyone wouldn't want to do. Anyway, i feel relieved and elated that we managed to make history by grabbing SUKPEN's first gold medal in floorball although I made a few mistakes that could've affected the team. Overall, it has been a joyful ride with you guys. I was inspired, encouraged and motivated by people I'm proud to call my teammates! I'm looking forward to fight along side by side with you guys in the near future. carpe diem!

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and feelings with us. Innebandy! Co. is certainly proud and honored to have you back on the team! Your presence in the team once again has certainly played a big role in our success as a team! We wish you all the best in obtaining excellent results for your PMR examinations as well as all future endeavours on and off the floorball court.

SUKPEN Floorball Tournament 2009

On the 3rd and 4th of December 2009, Innebandy! Co. took part in the first ever Sukan Penang (SUKPEN) floorball competition held in Shang Wu Primary School. There were a total of 9 teams participating in the competition which included school teams from St. Xavier’s Institution and Bukit Jambul Secondary School.

Team Innebandy!Co
# 6 Rooban Chand
# 7 Valerie Yentl Tan
# 8 Lee Chester
# 9 Ephraim Teh (C)
# 10 Joshua Yam
# 11 Previn
# 18 Jason Chew (G)
# 20 Deswyn Wan
# 22 David Kok
# 23 Darien Loh
# 44 TK
# 86 Nicholes Ong

On the first day, Innebandy! Co was all pumped up and ready to face their opponents. Innebandy! Co. was in Group A together with Contact FireAnts, Frontliners, SXI Lunatics and Firebrands Influence.

Group Matches Day 1

Firebrands Influence VS Innebandy! Co. (0-2)

Innebandy!Co ’s first opponents were against the senior Firebrands lineup known for their speed. The team didn’t start the match well as they were finding it hard to take control of possession. Things got even worse when David was sent off for incorrect distance after a free hit was being awarded to Firebrands. Within a minute, Innebandy! Co got another bench penalty called against them as Teck Keat was also send off for 2 minutes, because Innebandy!Co were playing with one extra player on court.

However, Innebandy! Co. still managed to hang in the game while playing with 3 players. After numerous attacks, Valerie soon found the net after a nice pass from Joshua. Innebandy! Co. started to find their game as Ephraim scored the 2nd goal, which was assisted by Deswyn. Innebandy!Co created various opportunities, but couldn’t find the back on the net as the Firebrands goalie was on top form. The game ended with Innebandy!Co winning by 2 goals to nothing.

Innebandy!Co VS Contact FireAnts (1-0)

It is always tough playing against Contact FireAnts as they are a very well organized team. The match started with Innebandy! Co. fielding their attacking line to try to get an early lead. The strategy worked as Innebandy! Co. took an early lead as early as the first minute. Nicholes took a sweet wrist shot putting the ball in the lower right corner, which left the goalie no chance in making a save.

The match was pretty stalemate after the goal as both sides were pretty even in terms of ball possession. Both sides defended well as no goals were scored after that. Special kudos goes out to Jason Chew as he guarded his goal well.

Innebandy! Co. were supposed to play 3 games on the first day of the tournament. However only the aforementioned 2 games were played as TNB decided to “save” some electricity for the Air Itam district as the power went out and the games were postponed to the following day.

Group Matches Day 2

Frontliners VS Innebandy! Co (2-2)
With two victories in hand from the first day, Innebandy went into this match with a rejuvenating pump up talk from Deswyn to start Day 2 off with a bang. With a slightly improved game play compared to the previous day, the team took the lead in the first half of the match through goals from Nicholes and Previn. However, mild defensive errors proved costly when aggressive runs from Frontliners forward Su Rong eventually leveled the scoreline from 2-0 to a final scoreline of 2-2.

Innebandy! Co VS Lunatics (SXI) (1-0)

Drawing the previous match was certainly a disappointment but definitely not a setback for the team. To prepare us for our next match, Deswyn huddled the team up for our customary team talk where he told us a story about his most ‘favorite floorball drill’. Reflecting on how Innebandy always used to “kick a**” in times past while applying the FUN from the aforementioned “drill”, he provided the team with the game plan for the next match. - Incorporate the FUN of the “drill” into the game play. That was the strategy for the next match against a team which consisted of very fast runners who have improved by leaps and bounds given their relatively new induction into the floorballing scene. Winning the match would not only mean that we would finish top of the group. It also meant that Deswyn would treat us to a sugar cane drink after the game as he had promised earlier!

Inspired by his words as well as the thought of the tantalizing feel of sweet ice cold sugar cane drink running down our parched throats, the confidence of the team sky-rocketed as the team play improved tremendously. The winning goal was eventually scored by the inspirer himself, which resulted in the team having a sugar cane drink treat from him=)
What “drill” was Deswyn talking about? Only the Inner Circle knows ;)

Semi-Finals

Innebandy!Co vs Bukit Jambul (4-0)

Playing in competitive floorball for the first time ever, Bukit Jambul going into the semi-finals was definitely an amazing feat and definitely not a team to be underestimated. Innebandy! Co. always giving 100% in every match pressed on with fine form in team play to win the game in convincing fashion. Numerous passes resulted in numerous shots on goal for the Innebandy! side. However, the Bukit Jambul goalie defended her position well as she blocked out most of the shots. The final scoreline of 4-0 was contributed by goals from Previn, David and a brace from Capt E.

Finals

Innebandy!Co vs Contact (1-0)
Already assured a medal In hand, Innebandy went into the finals with high determination and vigor to win another title for the beloved club. Deswyn and Sam gave us the talk and tactical approach we needed to face a rival of high caliber and determination. Before stepping on court, a short word of prayer followed by the singing of the Innebandy Cheer significantly raised the spirits of the players as well as the supporters around the hall. With renewed strength and hunger in the hearts of the Innebandy players, the attacking line of Innebandy started and successfully gave Innebandy the lead by a magnificent goal from Deswyn. More shots on goal were attempted after that but the ball somehow failed to find the back of the net. But that did not mean that the Innebandy line did not give up in attacking. On the other side of the court, counter attacks orchestrated by the opposing team were solidly disarrayed by Innebandy’s defence also not forgetting great goal keeping feats by first time goalie Jason Chew. Giving our best to the last minute, Innebandy eventually went on to win the match and made history as champions of the first ever SUKPEN Floorball Tournament.

Final Results

Champions- Innebandy! Co.
1st Runner Up- Contact Armies

2nd Runner Up – Ztec 8cers

The honour of winning the first ever SUKPEN floorball tournament could not have been more sweeter than our very own Deswyn being awarded the “All-Star” Center for the tournament. A rightfully awarded title, Deswyn’s efforts and all-rounded ability to assist the defender line in times of caution while providing the lethal attack when the forwards were charging were very much valuable to the Innebandy team and definitely did not go unnoticed.

Reflecting back on the night, the best moments that will be deeply lodged in the hearts of the players for many years to come was not the moment where the gold medals were hung around the players necks nor was it the moments where goals were scored. The best moments of the night were the moments where all Innebandiens formed an “Inner Circle” and started singing the Innebandy Anthem with their hearts and might. From the time the song was sung before each match to the time the song was sung after emerging champions, nothing could beat the feeling of being a part of the One Team with One Way.

[FLASHBACK IN MEMORY]:
Jason (Emcee):
Do you know who are the champions???

Crowd:
Innebandy!!!!

Jason (Emcee):
How do they cheer????

Crowd:
Innebandy!! Innebandy!! oooOOOOOOOOOo

Innebandy!! Innebandy!! oooOOOOOOOOOo HUU! HAA!

Standing amidst the Innebandy line hearing the crowd singing our team cheer certainly invoked touching emotions and feelings knowing that all efforts and sacrifices we have made as a team has definitely paid off. A broken toe nail, aching legs and even “excretion” problems did not stand in the way in our giving our best for the club.

Innebandy!Co Floorball Club would like to express our sincerest appreciation to Majlis Sukan Negeri Pulau Pinang for the induction of floorball into SUKPEN. May this be the start of many more milestones in the development of floorball in Malaysia.Successfully ending our 2009 campaign with a blast, let us continue striving on to improve ourselves both in training as an Inner Circle and also individually in our Independent Culture.

Innebandy! Co would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the amazing coaches for always believing in the team through many trials and tribulations. Most importantly, all praise and glory to God for his neverending blessings upon us. Things do not happen by luck but always by the blessings of God. Hence, the post shall be ended with the following word.

POT BLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!=D

Dalat Junior Carnival 2009

A post way long overdue, a thousand apologies to all readers of our beloved blog.

Innebandy! Co. took part in the first ever Dalat (U-16) Junior Carnival organized by the Dalat Floorball Club which saw participation from 8 teams all over Penang. Innebandy! Co was represented by a majority of new young players making their debut for the club together with a few old and experienced players.

Team Innebandy! Co.
Ephraim Teh (C)
Rooband Chand
Previn Mohan
Jason Chew
Darien Loh
Jonathan Chow
Ronnie Chand
Divesh Mohan

GROUP STAGE

Match 1
Innebandy! Co. VS St. Christopher’s International School
We stepped onto the court for the first match, against a team from St. Christopher’s International School. Our opponents were young, adorable children. However, Innebandy! Co. also had a few young players on the team this time round. The three new additions in the team were Divesh, Jonathan and Ronnie. Previn, also had his debut as this is the first tournament we had him with us. Team Innebandy! Co. won the game with a large margin, 7-0. Previn, the team’s fast and agile forward became a hat-trick hero by the end of the game. What a debut! The three younger players on the other hand, had a lot of fun as they were given a lot of game-time.

Match 2
Innebandy! Co. VS Dalat 4
Shortly after that, we were up against team Dalat 4. The faster and more athletic opponents managed to beat us to the end, with an end score of 3-1 The team had to adjust to keep up with their speed, making it a fast-paced game. However, this game was a good experience for our new players.

Match 3
Innebandy! Co. VS Dalat 2
Reeling from our defeat in the previous game, Innebandy was determined to collect maximum points from this match-up. Both sides played well as the Dalat team wasn’t about to give in without a fight. Although lacking in experience, the opponents made up every inch of it with their teamwork and physical prowess. It was a difficult but not impossible match for us as they were a hard side to break down. Innebandy emerged the victors, taking both points from our last group match of the tournament.

In all, Innebandy! Co. managed to accumulate a grand total of 4 points from our three group matches. This ensured us a spot in the semi-finals against the first runner ups of Group 2; Dalat 1.

Semi-Finals
Innebandy! Co. VS Dalat 1
With the semis ahead of us, Innebandy had a team talk regarding our strategy and mental conditioning. Although we were up against a weaker side, we definitely could not take things for granted. After the team-talk, we steadied our nerves and marched into court. Dalat 1 were no pushovers despite finishing second in their group. Both the teams played their hearts out in a tight match. Innebandy took the lead twice but conceded 2 goals to make it all even. As the match drew to an end, our captain broke through the Dalat defence to grab the deciding goal. 3-2 the score, to Innebandy.

Finals
Innebandy! Co. VS Dalat 4
So there we were, at the finals, against Dalat 4. They proved to be the strongest Dalat team sent on that day. As tired as we were, we got ourselves mentally and physically ready before our match with a short warm up and talk by our very own Captain E. We were all set to face off against them. Having to lose to them in the group stages did not undermine our confidence. It was crunch time. The crowd was roaring the tension was building. Feeling solicitous, we went in the court, determined to clinch the top spot.

As the soon as the first whistle was blown, we gave it all we got. Regardless of how tired we were, we pushed ourselves to our limits. Dalat scored the opening goal against us but it did not stop us from trying to level it up. The challenging, fast paced game got compelling as Previn assisted Ephraim for an amazing equalizer just a few minutes before the end of the match. The score was 1-1 when the match time ended. Then, both teams moved on to an intense 3 minute sudden death round. Unfortunately, we conceded a goal after only less than a minute into the match and that was it, we lost. Feeling slightly saddened from our loss we picked ourselves back up and realized that second place isn’t that bad at all. Being able to advance to the semi finals was good but reaching the finals and getting silver among many other teams was satisfying enough for us =).

Final Result
Champion- Dalat 4
1st Runner Up-Innebandy! Co.
2nd Runner Up-Dalat 1

One of Innebandy’s players, Previn Mohan making his debut for the club made it a successful first one as his agile and versatile style of play earned him the ALL-STAR award for this tournament! Innebandy! Co is really proud of you!

The participation of Innebandy! Co. in this tournament was certainly one beneficial especially for the experience and exposure of the new members in the club.

There would be no young players in the club without the effort and coaching poured in by the “old” players of the club, namely the coaches. The club would like to extend its sincerest appreciation towards our coaches, Sam, Deswyn, Linken and Nicholes for their undying support, time and effort in investing in the future of Innebandy! Co.

The Day We Rose Again

For the readers who are familiar with Innebandy! Co.’s achievements, you may have noticed that it’s been a while since we’ve hung the gold medal around our necks. However, things changed on the 12th of September 2009. Yes, my dear friends, on that very Saturday Innebandy! Co. grasped the gold medal in the Rising Star 2009 Challenge. It was a day filled with teamwork and the teamwork got us the spot at the top.

List of Players.
#20 Deswyn Wan (Keeper)
#9 Ephraim Teh (Captain)
#6 Rooban Chand
#7 Valerie Yentl Tan
#8 Lee Chester
#10 Joshua Yam
#11 Jason Chew
#13 Andrew Yeap
#23 Darien Loh
#86 Nicholes Ong

Everyone reached the Balik Pulau Stadium on time, except for Andrew Yeap. ( He had things to do. No worries, he didn’t get the venue wrong. ) Nicholes Ong was the most high spirited Innebandien at 8 a.m. I could barely keep my eyes open. Captain E instructed us to suit up and we were off doing warm-ups. Everyone was tired from jumping sideways, the grand finale in our warming up. After that, we stretched and had a little team talk. Mr. Kao Lin Ken (#31) gave us a few words of wisdom to get us pumped up. We went in and watched a few interesting matches. Time passed by so fast since all the matches were nice to watch.

Qualifying Round
We were up next. We went down to the playing area and sat outside the rink, anxiously waiting for our turn. Our goal keeper, Deswyn Wan (#20) looked good in his attire. The sight of him with the keeper pants on was very ‘cute’. We were up against Contact Army. The tension was high as Innebandy was meeting one of our arch-nemesis’ really early on. We ended the game with a 2-0 win, thanks to two goals from Jason ‘the Superstar’ Chew. The players heaved a relieved sigh after the final whistle; it hadn’t been an easy match, to say the least.

We had a LONG break before the next game was up. What did we do? Watch more floorball! (and eat a little, of course.) The next game was against Frontliners Fusion. The game ended with a 2-1 win. Clearly, we didn’t have our heads in the game yet. We were still warming up. Without Nicholes’ brace, victory would have been doubtful, at best. Later, the same player was disqualified from partaking from the tournament on grounds that he had previously represented Malaysia in a friendly against India. What a huge blow to us, and to Nic himself, it was. After all, this was his first appearance in competitive floorball since the horrific accident, which rendered him incapable to play the game he loved best, several months earlier.

But, no time to mourn the past, the present was fast catching up on us. The third, and final, match was up. Innebandy!Co took on Firebrands Bak Kua. Ironically, is was without our most senior forward in which we managed to rack up our biggest score. A comfortable 5-0 win saw the Innebandien skipper leading the charge with a well crafted hat-trick. This result ensured a place in the quarter-finals as well as guaranteeing Innebandy to be paired off with a “weaker” team.

So, the diagnosis so far? Looking good, Innebandy getting all 3 wins out of 3 and netting in 9 whilst conceding only a single goal so far. However, I don’t think these statistics really sank in to our tired heads as we all knew that we still had 3 tough games more to go before even hoping to win the Gold. After taking a well deserved rest, we got ready for our next encounter, against the SXI Kamikazes.

Quarter Finals
At first glance, this group of mostly small boys were not thought to be of any threat to us. Little did we know that they were not to be underestimated… The Saints played well, taking into account the short duration they have played the beautiful game, but conceded defeat to an overwhelming Innebandy side. In the end, the scoreline showed that size(and experience) really does matter as we took the quarter-finals 7-1. Still, it was a very good effort on their part for scoring against the much senior Innebandy team. Kudos to you guys if you’re reading this.

Semi Finals
The tension was building up. After coming so far, defeat was simply unacceptable. We were all a little worried just in case we haven’t started our ‘engines’ up yet. The game was up against team Ztec 2011. Many spectators would agree that this was the match to watch in this particular tournament. Both teams have a rich history against each other since the latters foundation; it wasn’t only about going to the next round, this was personal. Whoever won would not only be guaranteed a medal, but would have bragging rights till the next showdown.

Back to the game. Both Innebandy! Co. and Ztec 2011 showed high levels of energy and gave tremendous amounts of pressure. As you all know, it only takes a split second to net a ball in the goalpost in the game of floorball. We kept our game tight and focused on stopping their waves of attacks, one shot at a time. The camp we had definitely played a role in strengthening our teamwork and bonding, enabling us to play as better Innebandiens. The “holy trinity” of Innebandy, comprising of Lin Ken, Sam and Nicholes, combined to coach us and giving morale support by screaming their lungs out at us. It worked, with Captain E taking full advantage of a defensive error on Ztec’s part. The ball went through a practically non-existent free hit wall and into the net for the only goal of the game. Final score, Innebandy 1 : Ztec 0. Credit to the brilliant defensive teamwork of the ENTIRE team which played a vital part in making sure no goals were conceded. The three IC’s, particularly Insane Courage, were fully put into practice in this exhilarating match-up.

This is it. The moment you’ve all been waiting for. The Finals. Need I say more?

The Finals
Innebandy faced-off with a physical Minden Titanium team. Hearts pounding, we stepped on court for the final challenge in our pursuit for Gold. Win, and we make History once again. Lose, and be condemned to mediocrity for eternity(or at least another year). Right, here we go.

It was a somewhat diminished performance from both sides as it had been a long day. Nevertheless, the teams put in their best with all they had and set up a worthy finale for this prestigious competition. Solid defender, Rooban Chand, put an unstoppable shot in the back of the net, from not far off the half way line, to open the scoring. Minden Titanium were able to pull one back, but Innebandy proved just too hot to handle with a final scoreline of 3-1.
The feeling we got when the referee blew the final whistle was simply…

Indescribable.

Prize Giving
Mr. Christopher Koh gave a short speech before the top three (3) teams received their medals. Team Innebandy! Co. gave Ztec 2011 a “Whoosh!” as they were receiving their medals. Ztec 2011 then returned the favour by singing a part of the Innebandy! Co. cheer. We were all estatic when we heard the few words that go, “And the champions are……Team Innebandy! Co. !” We then marched to Mr. Edward Lim and received our medals. Each Innebandien walked up to him with great joy and pride. The smile on our faces told the whole story. After that, the all star team picks.

Goal keeper : Dawn Tan from Minden Titanium
Defender: Rooban Chand from Innebandy! Co.
Defender: Khoo Gim Hoong from Ztec 2011
Forward : Rish Van from Minden Titanium
Forward : Ephraim Teh from Innebandy! Co.

The day came to an end. We kept the boards, chairs, and tables back. After that, we headed home, weary from our exploits but well satisfied with the results.

Thank You very much..
Many thanks to Sam, Lin Ken, Deswyn and, to an extent, Nicholes, for each putting their heart and soul into coaching us week in, week out for umpteen years. Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to you guys for really sacrificing time and your own personal training by building us up individually as players and collectively as a team. Also, not forgetting our sole supporter on the day of the tournament, Previn, for bearing with us throughout the entire duration. I know we must have bored you terribly but we hope to make up for it by welcoming you with open arms into our big happy family, Innebandy! Co.

This section wouldn’t be complete without a proper appreciation for the Innebandy! Co. team which overcame the odds to claim the very first Rising Star Challenge Trophy. All of you guys(and girl) played an integral role in the road to glory. I fervently hope that we keep this momentum going and reach out for greater exploits to go down in our very own Hall of Fame (otherwise known as the Innebandy blog). Without every single player, the Inner Circle of Innebandy just wouldn’t have been complete. Well done, guys (and girl).

Lasty, and definitely not least, I would like to thank God for His abundant grace and mercy upon us even as we played in the Rising Star 2009 Challenge. It is truly by God’s protective hand upon each and every one of us that none of us sustained any serious injuries. And without His infinite grace, tempers would have surely been lost in the completion of the tournament. Thank you Jesus, for Your never ending Love for us.

And so…
As a conclusion, the Rising Star 2009 Challenge saw many Innebandiens realize their full potential as we took home the top honours. It is indeed true when they say that “With Great Teamwork comes Great Victories”. Many would say this was a fluke result, that it was a one-in-a-million thing. However, I can see this team rising up to even loftier heights in the not too distant future. Use this achievement as a stepping stone for times to come. Just keep on working towards the goal as a team and in your own Independent Culture. Lets prove the critics wrong and just go for it. Who knows where our next trophy would come from?
The Penang Floorball League 2010 anyone?

Special Olympics Motto-Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.

It Was....A Splendid Night

Once upon a time, there was a floorball club called Innebandy! Co. Every member in this club believed and upheld 3 sacred philosophies which are the importance of the Inner Circle, Independent Culture, and Insane Courage as a team. Firmly holding on to these beliefs, they grew tighter and stronger as a team and eventually defied all odds to become champions of the Rising Star Competition 2009.

The End

Not at all dear readers. This is in fact just the beginning of many more achievements, victories and success to come. Therefore, the formula that can be deduced from this story is: Inner Circle + Independent Culture + Insane Courage = Gold Medals and a…….

CELEBRATORY POTLUCK!!!

Which was held on the 18th of September to not only celebrate our recent success as Rising Star Champions but also to grow tighter as a team, to makan as a team and most importantly, to have fun as a team!

The potluck was held in Deswyn’s apartment and was initially meant to be held at the poolside. However, as the weather did not permit and it started to pour heavily, the potluck was held inside Deswyn’s apartment. Nothing is going to deter us Innebandiens from makan time!

By the stroke of 7.30 pm, everyone was all there eager and waiting to begin makan time. All except Joshua who ‘cleverly’ went to the poolside of the wrong apartment and got stuck there due to the heavy rain. As Deswyn mentioned to Joshua that his apartment is 20 storeys high and white in color with a brown top, Joshua went to another apartment nearby with “deceivingly” the exact same characteristics!! Finding out that he was at the wrong apartment from a resident there, Joshua kept his teammates waiting and starving while waiting for the rain to stop.

The team was however very kind and gracious and waited for Joshua to arrive before beginning the potluck. In the meantime, everyone huddled up in Deswyn’s living room to watch the World Floorball Championships Final Match between Sweden and Finland. GOOD STUFF.

At the stroke of 8pm, Joshua finally arrived at the door dripping wet with his mashed potatoes ala josh still dry and edible as he risked his life and body as protection for the potatoes for the sake of the hunger of his fellow team mates. Well, that was the least he could do for causing the long wait=p

Everyone quickly gathered around the potluck table eagerly waiting to sample the many dishes prepared by the Innebandy members. After praying for the food by Captain E, the potluck began! Everyone was happily chomping away as the food was really good indeed. Who would have known that Innebandiens had a secret talent for cooking other than floorball ! Amongst the food brought were ·
  • Chicken ala “Chick Flick” (Rooban) [as named by Rooban himself]
  • TESCO’s “Kenny Rogers” Chicken (Deswyn)
  • Cream Puffs (Win Shern)
  • Nuggets (Chester)
  • Pudding (Valerie)
  • Sago Dessert (Andrew)
  • Fried Bee Hoon (Jason)
  • Mashed Potatoes (Darien)
  • Banana Cake (Lin Ken)
  • Curry Sandwiches (Previn)
  • Pork Curry (Ephraim)
  • Soft Drinks (Sam)
Just by going through that list, you can sort of have a rough idea on how happy our stomach’s were that very night.=)

Darien's Mashed Potatoes

Win Shern's Puff

Previn's Curry Sandwich

Every item brought was indeed scrumptious as all Innebandiens began attacking the potluck table round after round. Sam told us not to worry if they gain any weight cause he will make sure we all lose it again in training on Sunday by doing 2 rounds of Shuttle Runs!

After everyone was stuffed and happy, it was time to ‘toast’ to our success in the recent Rising Star Competition. And what’s more a better way to toast as a team if not the customary victory “champagne” toast together! However, in place of the champagne, a fine bottle of Sparkling Juice was brought by Sam which tasted almost as good as having real champagne itself. AHH the sweetness of victory=p.

The officiating of this ceremony began with Captain E really giving his best in trying to pop the bottle. After numerous tries, finally only was Captain E able to “merasmikan” the ceremony by producing a well rounded OOMPH filled POP!! Sparkling Juice was then distributed all around by the captain himself. The team then gathered in a circle and toasted to their recent success by singing the Innebandy song together followed by everyone BOTTOMING UP! Although sparkling juice was used instead of wine, Jason “the superstar” still did not dare to partake of the drink as he felt it safe to not drink from any wine shaped bottle for fear of being drunk.

Innebandy, Innebandy! CooooooOOoOOoooo

The night prolonged with much enjoyed rounds of the game MAFIA in which killing, saving and catching took over eating for the night. Since the last MAFIA session at the Innebandy Camp, this round of MAFIA saw the improvement of all players using psychology as well as body language to steer the crowd their way. Two outstanding killers of the night, Valerie and Jason were the only ones able to kill everyone in a single round. Certainly targets to be cautious of in future MAFIA games! (For those who don’t know what MAFIA is all about please refer to Sam for an Introductory Course)

Sam Phd in Mafia

Jason killed everyone with his fake drunkard technique

Valerie going in for the Kill

After rounds and rounds of killing, the night finally came to an end with everyone satisfied both in their stomachs as well as their hearts. We certainly bonded as a team and believe that our tighter Inner Circle will bring us to greater heights than ever. The team would like to thank the coaches for their dedication and undying “love” and sacrifice in constantly training, motivating us and pushing us to achieve more than what we already are. Most importantly, we would like to give all the glory to God!

Win Or Lose. Innebandy moving forward as a team can be truly felt in the hearts of each and every member and is indeed the most important form of victory any team can achieve.

The first game for Innebandy! Co. since the end of the Penang Floorball League. How will we fare?

We were invited for a friendly match on the 24th of August, Monday night, by the Penang women’s state team. It was a win-win situation for both parties with the Penang side looking to build on their team chemistry and strategies while Innebandy hoped to gain some valuable experience for the junior players by facing them off against the much seasoned Penang women’s team.

The atmosphere that night was pretty quiet with both teams starting off with their respective warm-up drills. Sam Teoh and Deswyn Wan both refrained from participating and coached the team instead as the objective of that night’s game was more towards helping the team get use to coping without two of Innebandy’s main players rather than winning. On top of that, Innebandy had to play without Cuilin and Valerie Tan, who were called up for State duty. However, with the return of the much missed forward, Nicholes Ong, and the ever solid keeper, Lin Ken, in goal, things looked to be leaning slightly towards Innebandy’s side.

Preeeeet!

And we’re off.

The first period started off with the women’s team putting on an aggressive mind-set. Their quick passes and constant pressuring nearly paid off for them. Quite contrary to the oppsition’s strategy, Innebandy played a calm and collected game. Our forwards were having difficulties getting past the women’s first line of defence. That combined with Sharron in goal proved to be a difficult wall to break down. Furthermore, the female forwards were playing well for about half the period by pressuring the Innebandy defenders. Fortunately for us, they did not keep up their starting momentum and soon Innebandy drew first blood with Captain E setting up Jason “the Superstar” Chew followed by Joshua Yam.

Nevertheless, at the break, the two coaches were not happy with our game play thus far. Sam demanded a more solid performance from us Innebandiens especially the back two. He also challenged us to net in another five more goals by the end of the second period.

In the second half, things didn’t exactly go to plan. The women weren’t improving, Innebandy was counter attacking well from defence to forward in a blink of an eye. However, the players couldn’t finish off the opportunities and blew a number of one-on-one chances against the Penang goalie. More than once, the cutting edge of Deswyn was sorely missed by Innebandy as they came close on more than one occasion. But as we all know, in floorball, coming close is just not good enough. As for the women, they lacked the speed and dynamicism to penetrate our back line, the forwards did not chase down each ball and soon their game play grew stagnant. The period ended unexpectedly with not only a clean sheet for the state team but a late goal as well! The Ng sisters, Sarah and Sheryn, combined to catch the defense ball-watching which left Innebandy in shock and Lin Ken on his feet screaming profanities at his defense who left him wide open.

Wow. Not only did we NOT meet Uncle Sam’s target, but we let in a goal too. Things were looking bad. With the score at 2-1, the women’s team could easily turn the tables on us in the next 20 minutes of the 3rd ,and final, period. Once again, we were told to go out there and grab five goals while keeping the opponent’s at bay. After a invigorating team talk, Innebandy marched back into the court again to do battle with the Penang women’s state team for one final period.

The third period saw a transformed women’s team coming on court. They played with a burning determination to win and pushed up high with good fore checking. In the goalkeeping aspect Sharron was replaced by Suleen at the other end. Suleen managed to pull off many fine saves that would have done Lin Ken proud. Her quick reflexes proved to be a difficult obstacle for Innebandien forwards to overcome. However, with Insane Courage, we successfully netted in three more thanks to the Captain and Nicholes getting one goal each and Joshua finding the net for the second time of the night. The final score : Penang Women’s State Team 1 : 5 Innebandy! Co.

After the match, our coaches gathered us round in our Inner Circle for the customary team talk. Although we succeeded in getting a win, the scoreline did not reflect the real story. Our players squandered a host of chances while our defense was penetrated time and time again by the women’s team. Sam asked us to describe our game using only one word. The answers varied from player to player, some calling it “Messy” and “Rusty” while others thought the play was “Good” and “Okay”. In the end, Sam told us only one word “Gai”. I could understand how he felt like sitting on the sidelines, unable to do anything to help a struggling Innebandy side which he felt deeply about.

So, I strongly encourage each and every Innebandien to start or build on your Independent Culture. It is vital to have personal training sessions to improve on our physical condition and also our floorballing skills. Do it for yourself, do it for your coaches who place their trust in you by coming week in week out to train us, do it for the feeling of ecstasy of lifting up the 2010 Penang Floorball League Trophy and knowing you deserve every bit of it, and most of all, do it for Innebandy.

One Team, One Way.

One Team, One Way, One Malaysia

Innebandy! Co. had their first ever camp last weekend. It was a time for the team to hangout and fellowship after PFL 09.

The venue for the camp which was initially supposed to be held at Pantai Keracut but was later changed to Penang Watersports Centre. All the ‘campers’ gathered at T.O.P. somewhere around noon and had their ‘mee hun’ lunch. Oh boy, what a nice plate of mee that was!

Later on, we were all briefed on who’s following who to the camp site. The seniors drove us there. The lucky few who followed Nicholes managed to watch the chef at work, marinating the pieces of chicken which were going to be our dinner. The sight of the chicken being marinated made the observers drool.

When everyone reached the campsite, the campers were briefed on the groups they would be in for the camp. We were split into three groups of four. The three teams were named after each training philosophy : Inner Circle, Independent Culture, and Insane Courage. The seniors were all split into each team, except for Deswyn. He was the one who acted as the judge in our tasks and observed our every move. We then went to set up our tents. Each group had one except Deswyn and Sam, having their own tent. The girls had their own tent also. After that, were given a task. To write down what the philosophy of our team name meant to us and how we could apply it in everyday life. When it was complete, the paper we wrote on was stuck onto the tents respectively. However, for team Independent Culture, the crows ‘attacked’ their tent by bombarding a series of ‘poop grenades’. The paper merely lasted 5 minutes before being decorated with droppings of the crows.

Next up was the Amazing Race. Each team had to complete four tasks.
1) Answer a series of questions
2) Cook an egg
3) Roll the ball only using our stomach from one end to the other
4) Covering a floorball stick entirely and vertically in the sand without burying it.

The team started last at the final task but finished first thanks to the idea of Nicholes. All teams showed such teamwork in this challenge. After that, Deswyn told us that each team had to execute a morning exercise the next day. Each team was given the task of instructing either abs, upper body or lower body exercise Then, we were given free time to mingle around or take a shower. Soon after that, everyone chipped in to help prepare dinner. We had salad, BBQ Chicken and BBQ Sausage. The salad looked like it was prepared in a restaurant. The chicken pieces were simply magnificent and tender. The sausages were soft and well cooked.

As we were drinking orange juice, the guys sat around a big table. Each person shared their most embarrassing moment when it came to their turn, except for a few that decided to just listen. It could have gone on for rounds and rounds. We took a group photo, each holding the Malaysia flag as we were counting down for our National Day. Chester brought his beautiful camera to be used to snap photos throughout the camp. Sam then called all of us to play a card game called ‘Mafia’. He became the narrator at first. Many of us played the game until about 3 am in the morning. Kao Lin Ken succeeded as the only one that night to be the last killer standing. Kudos!

After that, chocolates were distributed among the campers who wanted some. Those who could not sleep went to shower. Some continued to playe ‘cho-tai-tee’ and others talked. As for me, I was talking to a team member of Innebandy! Co. who would be leaving Malaysia soon. We will miss her and we all wish her all the best in her pursuit. Her presence on court had always been noted.

Anyway, most of us slept at 5 am or so. Joshua Yam was the earliest to go to bed, but had difficulties sleeping because he heard the constant arguing of ‘My Bait Your Bait’ between Darien and Jason who were fishing alongside Nicholes. Nicholes was the last one to hit the sack. I woke up at about 8 am or so, from the morning alarm of nature, clucking of roosters and the chirping of crows. Yes , crows too. Lin Ken’s voice gave me the final push I needed to wake up. He was the earliest one ready (as usual) and standing in the middle of the camp site, waiting for everyone else. Everyone washed up and brushed their teeth, changed their clothes and met on the sandy, stone covered ground.

We had our morning devotion which was related to sports. I’m sure many of us learnt a couple of things besides reinforcing whatever we have already known. We were finally awoken by warming up with a game of dodge ball. The winners of the dodge ball game started their task last. Joshua Yam who did abs had such enthusiasm and showed such charisma in delegating the exercise for his team. His team was said to be the most ‘well-executed’. Then, Ephraim Teh took on the lower body. The song he chose to play along with the exercise was something to do with The Pink Panther and a soundtrack from Spongebob Squarepants. His team was awarded ‘most fun’ exercise. Then, team leader Cui Lin requested Nicholes to lead the upper body exercise. His team was awarded ‘most challenging’ exercise.

We then were told to pack up before having breakfast. Team Independent Culture were the last to finish packing up. Two of them washed the tent covered with crow droppings. After washing, they ran around the field trying to dry the layer. What a physical exercise! Then, we went kayaking. We were split into groups of two. The instructor briefed us on choosing the proper oar, rowing the kayak and staying safe. Four of the kayaks had a little race from one end to the other. After that, each team took a photo. Valerie Yentl Tan however wanted to be in every team’s photo. Sam was the photographer. Thus, he did not participate in the kayaking.

After that, everyone took their bath before they headed home. A few of the guys went for the group bath since the individual bathrooms were occupied. The few who went there (names not to be mentioned) really bonded after coming out of the bathroom. I wonder what might have happened in there.

A few of us then went to Fatty Loh Chicken Rice shop to have our lunch. I went to bed the moment I reached home. What a wonderful camp! Everyone had fun and made great team bonding. I can’t wait for the next outdoor activity!

PFL 2009 Div 1 Player's Review

#5 Chong Chau Chan: LF
He did not manage to make his debut due to work commitments.

#6 Rooban Chand: RD(2+2)
He is a player who aspires to play like Henrik Quist some day. And he showed great dedication to his passion and to PFL. Made a few good plays during the matches and passes the ball well to his forwards. However, he will still need to toughen up and be more aggressive when taking on the opposition forwards. His partnership with Win Shern in defence has been improving as the league went on.

#7 Valerie Yentl Tan: LF(4+1)
The girl with the most points in Penang League. She even beat some of the national players by getting herself 4 goals and 1 assist throughout the league. She is quick to get herself into threatening scoring positions and is a constant threat to opponents in their half. She is a good role model for the Penang girls' state team. If she is keen to play for the national team some day, she will have to work on her speed and endurance, which would definitely make her a even better player.

#8 Lee Chester: RD
The defender that makes the coaches' heart stopped beating at times with his ever “cool and calm” approach of passing the ball managed to rise up as the league progressed. Many times during the league, he was the last man defending for Innebandy as Sam goes up and help the attackers with his offensive runs. He should be investing in a new stick, which would help him improve on his basic techniques. The current stick that he is using is way too short for him.

#9 Ephraim Teh: C(2+1)
He is an excellent captain who constantly challenges his team to go the extra mile for the team and leading the team by example showing his team that nothing is impossible. Displayed some great skills on the court and shaking off defenders with a quick turn to leave defenders chasing shadows at times as well as having a good physique to hold the ball upfront while his fellow forwards makes their runs. Nevertheless, he still needs to work on his finishing as well as his stamina, which will definitely help improve his position on the point chart in the future.

#10 Joshua Yam: RF(0+2)

He successfully made his debut appearance for the club in PFL 2009. One of the reasons why the coaches’ think that he had a successful campaign is because he is very humble and teachable and ever willing to go the distance to improve himself. He will definitely be a better player in the years to come, if he continues working hard on his game. Thus, he will have to focus on his basic technique to further improve himself as a forward.

#11 Jason Chew: LF(1+0)

He was known as the "Superstar" and "National Player" in the team. Showed great promise at times with some good goal poaching skills in front of goal that catches team’s by surprise. He was the happiest boy alive, when he managed to put one pass Dalat Eagles at the end of the PFL outing. The boy shows great passion of the game as he made it to all 5 matches, even though he finishes school at 645pm. He will have to work on positioning and shots to become an even better player.

#12 Kao Cui Lin: LF
One of the senior players in the team, who is always there to give support to her team mates, be in verbally or morally. A player who never complains even if she does not get a chance to play and will give her every breath on court when she gets a chance to play. That is the sort of sacrifice/commitment she shows to Innebandy!Co, which is a fine example for the younger players. She still needs to be constantly reminded that she needs to be holding the floorball stick with both hands.

#13 Andrew Yeap: LF(1+1)
One of the few ‘runners’ for Innebandy!Co, which the club severely needs. He had a quiet outing this time round judging by his previous performance with the team. One of the factors of him being less threatening this time round is due to the change of court size. And getting into the right positions at the right time, which he does so well previously, takes time to improve and develop. With time, his predator instincts and his movement on court should improve and the coaches are confident that he will be a threat upfront as he always has been for Innebandy!Co.

#20 Deswyn Wan: C(10+5)
The coach of Innebandy!Co did not disappoint as he got himself a whopping 15 points in this league. He is a strong pillar for the team and is constantly inspiring the team on and off the court. Shows great appetite in front of goal and yet not selfish in supplying good goal scoring opportunities to his fellow team mates, which indeed make him a great playmaker. With more trainings and play ups, he would have a greater understanding with his fellow forwards. Hence, sharpening the attacks for Innebandy!Co. He was ‘awarded’ Man of the Match by BBF for the match against Frontliners and was also the ALL STAR CENTER for PFL Div 1 2009.

#22 Tan Win Shern: RD
The most well build defender in the team is very good in cutting off passes from the danger area. And in addition to that, shows great discipline in his own defensive zone. He will have to learn to support the team better by supplying the center and fowards with good passes to start up the attacks on a more frequent basis. His partnership with Rooban in defence has been slowly improving as the league went by.

#23 Darien Loh: LF(2+0)
This boy was the Man of the Match against Dalat Eagles and showed great potential throughout the league. He played without fear even though most of the opponents were ‘a-head’ above him. His never say die attitude and his good movement into empty spaces makes him one of the players to look out for in the future. And who could forget his special skill – The Spin Off, which not many players can do or dare to execute in a real game situation. However, he still neeed to shapens his basic skills to become an all-rounded player in the future.

#31 Kao Lin Ken: G
The “Henri Toivoniemi wanna be” constantly provides the team with good insight from his point of view as a goalie. He showed better mental strength this time round and was seen constantly encouraging his players throughout the league. Catching is one of the areas which he can improve on as he prefers to parry the on coming shots than trying to catch them. He was chosen as the All Star Goalie for PFL Div 1 2009.

#44 Sam Teoh: LD(5+4)

He was the coach that kept motivating the team to fight the “battle” and to win strong. The coach/player also showed great determination and promise by playing in all the matches even after his knee surgery. He was a constant threat to the opposing team with his frequent runs bombing up and down the court to support the team’s attacks from defence. On the other hand, he will have to toughen up especially when playing against better opposition. BBF chose him as their Man of the Match for both the games against Contact FireAnts and Ztec 8cers respectively. He was also selected in the ALL STAR TEAM as the left defender for PFL Div 1 2009.

#86 Nicholes Ong: RF(3+0)
He had a brilliant start to the 2009 league campaign by grabbing himself a well deserved hat-trick against Minden UniHawks, but had a shoulder injury later on which forced him to be sideline for the rest of the league. Innebandy!Co did miss his goal poaching instincts upfront badly, especially the game against Frontliners. He would definitely be one of the top point leaders, if not for his freak accident. Hopes he keeps himself in shape after a long floorball ‘break’ and to continue banging in the goals for Innebandy!Co in the future matches.

#89 Daniel Cheang: RF
He did not get to play much this time round as his parents did not allow him to come for the matches. However, he will still be playing for Innebandy!Co in the near future. He will have to continue practicing on his own at home and come for trainings whenever possible.

0022 1-0 Deswyn Wan
0157 2-0 Deswyn Wan (Valerie Yentl Tan)
0500 3-0 Valerie Yentl Tan (Joshua Yam)
1230 4-0 Sam Teoh (Joshua Yam)
1658 5-0 Sam Teoh (Deswyn Wan)

0404 6-0 Valerie Yentl Tan

0558 8-0 Own Goal by Edwin Ooi
1150 9-0 Jason Chew (Deswyn Wan)
1553 10-0 Deswyn Wan
1942 11-0 Deswyn Wan

Ztec played it the Woossshhh way, Contact played it the FireAnts way, Minden played it the Hawks way, Frontliners played it the Spartans way, Dalat played it the Eagles way.....

And we played it our way. Innebandy!Co's way.
We are One Team, One Way

A win by a goal will get us bronze for PFL Div1 2009.

Despite the fact that Innebandy!Co is head to head with Contact FireAnts on the table before this game is played, this is the only game in the league that the Coaches did not give any pressure on innebandiens. How often would this happen during a league?

The only reason is because this is the last game and the whole team should enjoy it. But this doesn't mean that we took this game lightly. The team were asked to maintain ball possessions throughout the game and to score as many as possible due to the fact that Dalat has only one and a half line on the bench that night. And for the goalie, he gave himself clean sheet as his priority.

Goals were pouring into the Eagles' net not long after the faceoff. With the freedom the Coaches gave, everyone wants to put their name for glory for the last time in this league.

However, only a handful made it. Deswyn dominated the centre court and seized every opportunity to break their defence and beat the goalie. And Valerie being unmarked most of the time did well too in helping the team getting the bronze with her goals. Sam being kiasu also grabbed 2 for himself. Both Joshua and Captain E did some really nice passes to assist into scoring as well.

2 innebandies that are the youngest and were most insignificant throughout the league rise up for the occassion. Against all odds and against "goliath", they managed to find themselves on the right spot at the right time to slot in the goal perfectly into the net. They made their team mates, supporters, spectators, parents, brothers, sisters, friends and most of all they made God proud!

Boy oh boy. My heart shouts for joy when I saw them scoring. It felt way way better than winning the gold medal. Both of them played as if they are in the world championship finals. They may be small in size but they have a great hunger for Floorball. Definitely a contender for future all-star.

Innebandy!Co saw the fruits of its harvest that moment. Much more to come! Be prepared to reap what you sowed.

INNEBANDY!CO v ZTEC 8CER

Final Score 2-5 (1-3, 1-2)

0323 0-1 Loh Jo-Wyee (Chiam Ter Min)
0844 1-1 Rooban Chand (Andrew Yeap)
1828 1-2 Wong Ken Wye (Yeoh Jun Wooi)
1847 1-3 Yeoh Jun Wooi (Wong Ken Wye)

0733 1-4 Chiam Ter Min
1003 2-4 Sam Teoh
1427 Innebandy! Co's time out
1519 2-5 Loh Jo-Wyee (Chiam Ter Min)

The toughest match in the league.

Deswyn was the Coach of the day and he decided to do something different. His main strategy was not to concede any goals in the 1st period. How? By asking all innebandiens to be discipline in their positions and put pressure on the opponent as they cross the half court line.

Did that happened? Obviously no. Ztec drew the first blood. Careless mistake by Sam which gave Ztec the chance to score. However our defender-turned-forward Rooban leveled the game by a nice one-two with his partner Andrew. He scored as if there were no goalie guarding their goalpost.

10 mins later disaster strikes again. The score was favourable to Ztec at the end of 1st period. And Inne down by 2 goals. Did I mentioned that Deswyn and Sam played the whole 1st period? That was part of his strategy as well.

2nd period's strategy was to try winning the game back. And that didn't happen as well although Sam did scored one goal but they gave back 2. Guess the 2 pairs of legs are really tired.

Like I've said. It's the toughest match for Inne in the whole league. And innebandiens gave their best for this match. If not the scoreline would tell otherwise. Credit must be given to our goalie as he was on the peak of his performance. Marvellous goalkeeping by "Henri wannabe".

That night we showed the spectators what Insane Courage is all about. We were fearless and we fight until the last whistle was blown. Btw, Sam could not get up for work the next morning. pfft

Final Score 3-2 (3-0, 0-2)

The ball is round.

A match with a few scorer. A match with little assists.
A match that stopped out hearts beating. A match that crushed our dreams for the gold.
A match that spells ouch!

The most difficult 1st period so far for IC in this league.
But nonetheless, the 2nd period was ours.
That's the exciting part of Floorball.
It's never only win, win and WIN!
The greatest battle is within each man him/herself. To be able to overcome the defeat and focus on the reward.
Each innebandiens has to understand that losing a game is part of our team development and not team determent. (please click on the word)
The journey of our team development is really exciting as we go through each and every game together throughout this league.

Are you on this interesting journey with me?

The title is still open for all teams including IC. Lets strive for it!

2 more games and that's the end. But the team developments continue on and never ends. And as innebandiens we always strives for excellence because perfections can never be attained. Lets play our next two games like we never played Floorball before!
