After 2 years of being unable to emerge victorious against the FLOOR-BALL-ERSS!!!! , the year of 2010 finally saw the breaking of the Spartan curse.

However, it wasn’t an easy battle. The Spartans fought valiantly as always but this time round, they were up against a much more strengthened Innebandy side. With loaded artillery coming from the forwards and a strong fort of defense, Innebandy managed to keep the rampaging Spartan attack at bay- with a clean sheet.

The Spartans definitely played well in defense too keeping the goals against them to a minimum. However, the forward combination of Bryan and Deswyn proved deadly enough to gain Innebandy the victory. With a brace from each of them in the 1st and 3rd period respectively, the Spartan curse was finally broken!

And now.history has been rewritten. The Spartan curse has finally been broken. Because in the year 2010 ,

Innebandy! Co. vs Minden Unihawks

Period 2

Period 3
7-2 Loo Hung Shen
8-2 Deswyn Wan
9-2 Deswyn Wan (Sam Teoh)
10-2 Bryan Looi
11-2 Ephraim Teh (David Kok)

SOT's 40-7 (12-2,16-1,12-4)

Although the scoreline depicts a solid win by Innebandy, this game saw the emergence of the Minden Unihawks team who portrayed the never say die attitude gallantly in the 3 periods of game play on this eventful night.

In the first period, Innebandy! Co.was shown a good display of defense by the Minden Unihawks team. However, it was the goalie W.W. Lee of Minden Unihawks who stood out in holding the MDU fort together. Being on fire that night, she managed to block out most of the shots arrayed from the Innebandy side. Although the SOT’s were aplenty from the Innebandy side, only 1 shot could be converted in the first period resulting in a 1-1 draw in the first period.

During the break after the first period, Coach Sam huddled the team and gave us the talk we needed. “PLAY OUR GAME” and “BE HUNGRY FOR GOALS”. This instruction clearly worked for the Innebandy side as the 2nd period saw us raking in 6 goals out of which 4 were well poached by our “Park” Soon Hooi thus meeting the record set by Sam for him during the break of the 1st period.

At the beginning of the 3rd period, MDU managed to hit back one more goal against Innebandy. However, Innebandy responded by hitting back another 4 goals to end the game with a score of 11-2.

Having responded well in the 2nd and 3rd periods, Innebandy earned the accolade the Flying V from the MDU team thus showcasing the improvement of our gameplay as a team. However, it was a good sight to see not only Innebandy improving but also the MDU team. The floorball scene in Penang is definitely headed in the right direction!=)

Innebandy!Co. VS Contact Fireants

12-0 (3-0, 4-0, 5-1)

Period 1
1-0 Jason Chew
2-0 Deswyn Wan (Jason Chew)
3-0 Rooban Chand

Period 2
4-0 Bryan Looi (Deswyn Wan)
5-0 Jason Chew (Deswyn Wan)
6-0 Jason Chew (Bryan Looi)
7-0 Sam Teoh (Bryan Looi)

Period 3
8-0 Deswyn Wan
9-0 Jason Chew (Deswyn Wan)
10-0 Deswyn Wan (Bryan Looi)
11-0 Deswyn Wan
12-0 Previn Mohan (Joshua Yam)
12-1 Edward Lim (Lim Kai Sheng)

SOT: 28-16 (10-3, 6-2, 12-11)

We have come a long way from the days of yore when Innebandy! Co. only used to rely on several key players to bring in the goods. If not for the continuous investment of hard work put in by the coaches coupled with the never say die attitude exuberating from each and every single player in the team, the start to the season would never have been one expected with the scoreline above.

Starting the season against the PFL champions of 2008, we found ourselves more calm and collected on court this year. Good passes led to great playups especially from Line 1 of the team comprising a deadly forward combination of our two attackers Deswyn and Bryan and a bull once fondly known as “Malaysia” now graduated earning the nickname “Park Ji Sung” ;our very own Jason Chew.

Contact gave Innebandy a few scares throughout the match thanks to speedy runs from their forwards. Innebandy faced a side who never backed down till the last minute and their effort was rewarded with a goal scored in the last second of the last period. An attitude to be applauded for!

For most of the game, we seemed to be in control with good ball possession. Shot after shot , we managed to convert 43% of our SOTs. Although there were moments where speedy forward Calvin Lim from CFA managed a few one on one’s with our goalie, the Innebandy defense did a great job defending the fortress in their ranks with a much more mature gameplay this time round.

All in all, it was a good outing for us as we see our game take another step closer to maturity on court. Good mental preparation, good training philosophies, good coaching throughout the years has seen the rise and growth of Innebandy from a “baby” to “Adulthood” *quoting Deswyn*. We will definitely give it our all for the title this year!

A Labour of Passion

On the 1st and 2nd of May 2010, Innebandy! Co. took part in the Labour Day Floorball Challenge which is an annual affair organized by Dalat International School. This year’s competition was graced by the participation of floorball teams all the way from Singapore which is well known as the powerhouse for floorball in the Asian region. Two teams which came all the way up to Penang were the NTU Hurricanes (having several Malaysian capped players as well as an ex-Singapore national player) as well as the SGS Juniors.

Innebandy! Co. & NTU Hurricanes

Day 1

For the competition pool, Innebandy was drawn in the “Group of Death” together with the top seeds for the competition namely NTU Hurricanes, Ztec 1 and Dalat 1 while the other pool consisted of Contact, Dalat 2, Ztec 2 and the SGS Juniors. The first 2 games in the knockout stage were against Ztec 1 followed by NTU. Having tough matches as early as this in the competition would mean that these matches would either make or break our qualification to the semi-finals.

Stepping on court filled with Insane Courage, we faced our first opponents of the day Ztec 1. Giving our all, it was a nail biting match as the spectators were seen screaming and cheering on for their teams. Throughout the periods, it was a cat and mouse game with Innebandy taking the lead through Ephraim. Ztec 1 kept the pressure on catching up point for point. Finally, the game ended 3-2 to Innebandy through another goal scored by Ephraim and the final nail hammered in by Sam.

The second match was against the titans of the competition hailing from Singapore, the NTU Hurricanes. The titans proved their worth by hitting 3 goals past us in the first period. With the vast experience and speed of the NTU players, we did not manage to dominate and only ended up scoring a goal. At half-time, we were down 3-1. However, although it seemed as though all was lost, we somehow found ourselves not fazed at all by the fact that we were trailing 3-1 thanks to the mental preparation that the coaches have put us through. We entered the court during the 2nd half with more insane courage and determination and finally managed to hit 3 goals back against the Singaporeans to end the match 4-3 thanks to goals from Sam, Deswyn and Ephraim. The most memorable and inspiring occurrence during the match which led us to victory was the beginning of the 2nd period when Linken shouted these very words “ COME ON GUYS! LOSING IS UNACCEPTABLE!” Hearing these words from our captain instilled in us a new vigor and determination which resulted in the final scoreline.

Winning both our early and hardest matches, we were ensured a spot in the semi-finals and made a grave mistake by taking our 3rd game lightly against Dalat 1. Having won the top seeds of the competition, we entered the court resting on our laurels which resulted in us losing 3-2 to the Dalat side. This gravely disappointed the coaches and Coach Sam made us reflect on our game by making the team take a walk outside the gymnasium in silence and it was a walk which the team would never want to make again. It was a mistake dearly made but a lesson well learned by the team. We then picked ourselves up and promised to give our all in the semi-finals on the following day.

Day 2

Having lost the previous game and gaining a lesson well learned, we entered this game with a passion and hunger to do our best and it certainly proved essential as we went on to beat Contact 6-2. This win set us up with a date against our opponents from the group stage Ztec 1 who also qualified to the finals after cruising to an easy victory over Dalat 2.

The final match was extremely nail-biting and tension filled. The goalies on both sides were busy as the shots kept coming in from both sides and both goalies did extremely well to keep the scoreline to a minimum. This match however started with Ztec 1 scoring the first goal. Innebandy pressed hard and from then, it was a cat and mouse game all over again with Innebandy keeping up for every goal that Ztec 1 had scored by amazing efforts from Deswyn. During the interval, Coach Deswyn huddled the group and revived our strength and stirred up our determination to fight for victory through the 7 laws of victory. In the end, we gave it our all and our victory came when Deswyn executed an awesome turn to steer of a defender and hit home a bullet shot to the goal mouth which left the spectators in awe. Final score, 3-2 to Innebandy thanks to great team play and a marvelous hat trick from Deswyn.

Hence our journey ended in victory but what was more important was the realization of the boundaries we could exceed if we had the right mentality and the passion to always succeed. Team Innebandy would like to thank our Coaches and Captain for the “love” shared to us week after week . Apart from the effort put in by our coaches and the team, we would like to thank Deswyn for generously sharing with us his share of Power Bars which he received as a member of the Power Bar Team Elite. The team gained a massive energy boost through the wonder bars which indeed played a part in our rise to victory. We would like to thank Power Bar for sponsoring our Coach Deswyn as a Team Elite member and we believe that Power Bar has made an excellent choice for choosing Deswyn as a member of the Team Elite as he is an extremely great sportsman who is not only concerned in training us to win but also inspiring us to adopt the right and winning attitude as a sportsman. Thank You Power Bar!

Friendly Match: Frontliners Spartans vs Innebandy! Co Team Elite

After a long break from competitive floorball since the end of 2009, Innebandy started off the 2010 pre-season with their first friendly match against the Frontliners Spartan. Playing again in the Balik Pulau Indoor Stadium after many months was something the team really looked forward to and this was seen through many of the players (including referees Uncle James and Uncle Sam) arriving early and eagerly waiting for entrance into the stadium. After a solid and good warmup conducted by Deswyn, it was game time.

With the 3 ICs firmly embedded in our hearts, we entered the stadium with a new found mentality of commitment, passion and strife for victory which has week by week been shaped into the players based on the seven laws of victory implemented alongside the 3 IC philosophies.

The game plan was clearly laid out for us. Adapt to the play that coach Sam has strategized for the team to outmuscle the opponents. We knew that if we played our cards right, this strategy would work wonders for the team. The team was divided into two lines- Line 1 and Line 2 with each line given the same strategy and tactics to execute on court.

Facing the mighty Spartans known for their speed and spirit, this match would be a test of our passion as well as creativity on court.

Face Off

With solid and creative playups from Line 1, team Innebandy drew first blood through Jason Chew driving home a well taken shot just below the top of the goal mouth. Line 1 continued to maintain the ball possession well and had numerous goal scoring opportunities. However, it has been a long time since Innebandy played in the Balik Pulau Stadium terrain which saw the defenders of Line 2 having a hard time adapting to their usual play. The Frontliners kept the pressure well and hence managed to pull back a goal shortly after that.

During the break, words of advice and an uplift from the coaches saw the Innebandy defence becoming stronger and more determined from the second period onwards. No goals were conceded as the Innebandy defence kept their guard well. On the attacking side, goals were coming in for the Innebandy side especially from Line 1. Beautiful plays and good communication between team mates left not only spectators in awe but even the referee(s) as well ;) All in all, Innebandy managed a total goal haul of 8 goals.

Jason Chew (3 goals)

Deswyn Wan (2 goals)

David Kok (2 goals)

Bryan Looi (1 goal)

After 3 periods of gameplay, the score ended 8-1 to Innebandy. However, it was obvious that Line 2 had alot to work on to catch up and be on par with Line 1.

All in all the coaches were happy with the play not neglecting the fact that much more work has to be done for a much solid play especially from Line 2. Nevertheless, the rise of Line 2 will not be impossible because of the fact that with unquestionable commitment and unquenchable passion shown by the Innebandy team, victory will certainly be inevitable.

Preparing for PFL-Division I - A word from the coaches

For the year 2010, the committee of Innebandy! Co. has convened and came to a conclusion of the vision and goals for the club in the year 2010.
After a team talk with the club, the team is now motivated to take on 2010 and bring the club to greater heights with the core philosophies of the club which is none other than the 3 ICs + 7 Laws of Victory

One of the significant implementations made in the club is the introduction of two teams in the club which are Team Elite and Team Livestrong of Innebandy! Co. The former being the competitive elite team of the club while the latter being the platform for the younger players to make it into the elite team.

It is also the pleasure of the club to introduce the new captain of Innebandy! Co. Mr. Kao Lin Ken our beloved goalie with his passion and determination as well as the love of floorball to lead us onwards through the path of battle.

Regardless of which team an Innebandy player belongs to, it is mandatorily required in trainings nothing but the best of effort and attitude from each player. Training is hard and “loving” your body may seem daunting. But the whole process is not impossible and is proven through the milestones the coaches of Innebandy! Co. have achieved in floorball.

Hence, this is their personal address to the team to take on the challenges for personal and overall team growth this year in preparation for the Penang Floorball League 2010-Division I

Deswyn:

Leadership is responsible - It is our responsibility to make sure players are at their best performance by
executing the right plan and strategies. We are also concern about player's attitude and the application of
the 3ICs on and off court. In Innebandy!Co, winning don't just stop there. We go beyond. ie. attitude, soft skills, etc

Losing is unacceptable - We believe in mental strength and mental preparation, thus setting our mindset on winning
every games and giving all out in our training will make us 'unbeatable'.

Passion is unquenchable - It is only when you're passionate bout something. You would automatically take the effort
to improve yourself and want to be the best. We want to be driven by passion.

Creativity is essential - Floorball is a very fast paced game, thus being creative in our attack or defense, will
distinct us from our competitors. Individual skills and stick work does play an important role in being creative.

Quitting is unthinkable - Our training especially physical training is one of the toughest in Penang. We strive to finish
whatever we start as a team. Like how Lance Armstrong puts it, 'Pain is temporary but quitting lasts forever.' We will
never stop trying.

Commitment is unquestionable - Commitment is what makes the team grow and solid. The minimum requirement for
an individual to join team LiveSTRONG is commitment. Team Elite has no excuse in this area. Players who show lack
of commitment will be degraded.

Victory is inevitable - By practicing the 3 ICs and reflecting on the Law of Victory, Victory is then in our hands!

Sam:
The 3ICs and the Law of Victory will certainly come to past when we look back the year 2010. Each one of us has the capability to go the distance, be it for yourself or the team. And this year it’s about breaking the limits and go the distance. The ONLY thing that limits you is yourself! Let’s begin with end in mind!

The 7 laws of victory

Leadership is responsible
Losing is unacceptable
Passion is unquenchable
Creativity is essential
Quitting is unthinkable
Commitment is unquestionable
Victory is inevitable
